When Children Learn, Music Lives On

In a small desert village called Modha in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, children from the Manganiyar musician community grow up with music woven into everyday life.

They sing songs that call out to Ram and Allah together. They celebrate Diwali and Eid side by side. For generations, their music has existed to bring people together — to create peace, not performance. Along with this music, these children carry something else quietly:a wish to get formal education.

During tourist seasons, many adults travel for performances, leaving women and children behind. While elders continue to pass on musical knowledge, access to basic education remains fragile and inconsistent.

What Aram Porul did last year

Over the past one year, something simple and hopeful has been built in Modha. With small support from individuals:

  • A local graduatewas recruited to teach the children for half the day
  • A classroom that had been unused for years was repaired, so learning could happen in the village itself
  • The community stepped in to support the tutor in local ways — ensuring children attend and the space stays alive

Now the children have a safe, familiar place to learn in the morning — and continue their music in the afternoon. This effort has been quiet. It has worked.

Why support is needed now

Earlier support has ended, and without help, the teacher may have to stop coming. If the teacher cannot be supported, the classes may stop. And if that happens, these children — many of whom have never had consistent schooling — will lose their only safe learning space.

The community does not want to choose between education and music. They want both. A few hours of learning in the morning, Music for the rest of the day, A future where children grow with confidence, skills, and identity.

What your support does

Your support helps keep this simple rhythm going for another 2 years. ₹12,000 sustains the teacher for one full month. Rs.2,40,000 for two full years

 This means:

  1. Children continue to learn basic reading and writing
  2. Music continues to be practiced and passed on
  3. A fragile but beautiful space does not fall silent

This is not about building something new. It is about not letting something good disappear.

A small act of kindness

This classroom exists because a few people chose to help. Its future depends on continued kindness.

One contribution can help a child learn — while their music continues to bring peace.

It says to the children: your learning matters.
And to the community: your culture is not something to be left behind.
